Three years ago, Kinney told us the third book in his beloved series was being adapted. Now, it’s finally happening. OTN has found concrete evidence that the reported Wimpy Kid film this Christmas is indeed The Last Straw.

Last week, we wrote an article about how Disney is currently casting for the role of Greg Heffley for an adaptation of The GetAway, as discovered by our friends at The DisInsider. Matt Danner (Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again), who will be directing The Getaway, took to social media to confirm the news of the film, while adding the context about a fourth Wimpy Kid film coming out this Christmas. We now know which book is being adapted.

Last night, the MPAA ratings board posted their weekly ratings for films, with one in particular catching our eyes. a film titled Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Last Straw was rated PG for mild rude humor. This will be the fourth Wimpy Kid film to release on Disney+, with animated adaptations of the first book, Rodrick Rules, and fan-favourite Cabin Fever already being released in 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively.

The Last Straw was released in January of 2009 as the third entry in the Wimpy Kid series. To this day, the book remains a fan favourite amongst readers and is still widely regarded as one of the best in the series. Interestingly enough, when the live-action films were being made in the early 2010s, The Last Straw was skipped over in favour of Dog Days. Read the synopsis for The Last Straw:

Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is easily able to sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to the military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up… or get shipped out.

Are you excited to see The Last Straw finally be adapted to the big screen? Let us know!
