The Walt Disney Company will no longer be releasing physical media in Australia, multiple sources have confirmed to One Take News. The last film being released physically in the country will be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn’s trilogy capper that released to critical acclaim and grossed $850M at the box office.

Sources tell us the reason for the shutdown was due to diminishing sales numbers in Australia as well as the focus of resources shifting to Disney+. DVDs and Blu-Rays across the country are being heavily discounted and sold for 10 euros or less as the stock is being emptied. However, sources add that Disney films may still be released physically through services such as Criterion. There is no word on whether physical media production will cease worldwide just yet.

Disney physical media is well past it’s heyday as we’re now in the streaming age, where everything is accessible at the click of a button. However, physical media still has its fans and has recently been brought back into the conversation as streamers remove shows and films due to cost cutting measures. It’s also been touted as the superior viewing experience for film as the quality is higher than streaming.
