A movie shot entirely in infrared, repetitive dialogue, a sword-humping character. What do all of these things have in common? They’re all things that shouldn’t be in your movies.
Someone didn’t tell Harmony Korine that.
Aggro Dr1ft, for better or for worse, is definitely something. I don’t know whether I fully enjoyed it or not but I can definitely say I had an experience. Harmony Korine tries something completely new and the more I think about it, the more indifferent I am to it. On one hand, it’s a joke to watch but on the other hand, I’m in awe of how bold Korine was in making the choices he did. It has to be seen to be believed.
The big draw to this film is the infrared look of it. The 80 minute movie is shot entirely in this format and I thought it was going to be headache inducing, I actually found it to be quite enjoyable and didn’t bother me too much. Korine actually lit the film fairly well so when it was shot in infrared, it actually looked tame. I don’t know if I’d tell every filmmaker to do this but Korine makes it work in a way only he could.
Far and away the best part of this movie is Travis Scott’s only scene. Not only is it awesome to see the megastar on the big screen, but it also happens to be one of the weirdest moments. However, his one scene is so perfect for the kind of guy Travis is that it works perfectly.
Now, let’s get onto the many, MANY negatives.
The script is non existent. The film just steals lines from GTA games and repeats any original dialogue over and over and over again. The story is paper thin and carried by the repetitive lines, the bad characters don’t help either. The most memorable character is not the protagonist, but rather a hip thrusting, sword humping bad guy who seemingly gets off at the sight of anyone. The score is painful to listen too and by the time it’s over you will be running out of the theatre to experience normality again. This is the nicest I can be about the movie’s many issues but for now, know that this is all I can get in to without spoilers.
Aggro Dr1ft, if you can even call it a film, is horrendous. A thin plot, overly repetitive dialogue and stupid characters make this movie. However, I found the viewing experience to be somewhat enjoyable and feels like a movie that could gain a cult following at midnight events over time. I don’t know who in their right mind will buy this film and distribute it but I’m extremely curious about the future of Aggro Dr1ft.
