Deadpool & Wolverine is without a doubt, the most hotly anticipated movie of the year. Not only is Deadpool finally being integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Hugh Jackman is making his comeback as Wolverine, marking a dream come true for Marvel fans everywhere. However, this is gonna be even more special for Canadians. This movie is deeply rooted in the Great White North and today, we’re breaking down 5 Canadian Connections that’ll make Deadpool & Wolverine more significant for all the canucks out there.
5. An appearance from a Canadian landmark
During the trailers and TV spots for Deadpool & Wolverine, eagle-eyed fans noticed that an iconic Canadian landmark was present in what appeared to be The Void. The CN Tower, arguably the most iconic building in Canada, can be spotted in the film. The tower, located in Toronto, is a popular tourist attraction in which you can not only get the tallest view of Toronto, but you can even walk along the edges and even eat a dinner on a rotating restaurant. While you won’t be doing any of that in this film, you can still see the Toronto representation loud and clear.

4. Canadian director is the mastermind behind the camera
Canadian director Shawn Levy enters the Marvel universe, marking his third collaboration with Ryan Reynolds as well as his third collaboration with Hugh Jackman. Levy is no stranger to working with IP, having created the Night at the Museum franchise, being the main producer of Stranger Things, and handling tons of different franchises in Free Guy. Deadpool & Wolverine is very much up Levy’s alley, especially with the two leads already having great working, and personal, relationships with each other and Levy.

3. The ultimate Canadian writing team
Three of the film’s writers, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, and Paul Wernick, are all born and raised in Canada. Reynolds and Wernick have even been co-writers since the first Deadpool film nearly 8 years ago, and have worked on 5 total projects together over the years, either as co-writers or just movies Reynolds was in. The Canadian roots run deep and if this is anything like the first two movies the Canadian marks left in the script are going to be nothing short of substantial.

2. Canadian stars take centre stage
At the forefront of this film is none other than Ryan Reynolds himself. The Vancouver native has long been a major supporter of his home and native land, advocating for many of his movies to be filmed in the country if possible and was very close to purchasing the Ottawa Senators, an NHL team in the country’s capital. On top of starring in the film, Reynolds is also a co-writer and producer of the film, being arguably the biggest reason this even got made in the first place. Without Reynolds, there would be no Deadpool.

1. A celebration of Canadian superheroes
The titular heroes of Deadpool & Wolverine take center stage here. Not only are both superheroes Canadian in the comics, it’s also a massive part of their characters in the films. Wolverine is from Alberta and Deadpool is from Saskatchewan. They were recruited into Weapon X, a Canadian military program and Wolverine was even an original member of Alpha Fight, Canada’s first superhero team. Expect quite a few Canada jokes in this film, as there have been in previous X-Men movies, along with a notable amount of coverage regarding the country in the film’s excellent marketing campaign. This movie is a celebration of Canadian superheroes and this is no more evident than the two leading heroes.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theatres this Friday, July 26!
