John Wick: Chapter 4 is a masterclass in action movies. After the insanity of the first three movies, I never expected them to top it, let alone make what I can only describe as one of the greatest action movies of all time. Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves have outdone themselves yet again in what is a non-stop, action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride. John Wick: Chapter 4 sets the gold standard for modern action movies and is sure to be one of 2023’s best theatre experiences.
The action sequences are the true star of the show here. There’s a phenomenal one take sequence that lasts for an eternity and my jaw is on the floor the entire time. Even as I’m writing this review I can’t stop thinking about the sequences in Paris and in Germany. Chad Stahelski and his crew went all-out for the latest entry and created some of the best action sequences of all time.
The world building in John Wick 1, 2 and 3 finally pays off in Chapter 4 as we finally see the full powers of the High Table and everyone involved. While it’s definitely a lot to take in if you haven’t somehow seen any of the other John Wick films, I think that they mythos plays into the film perfectly and as a fan of the franchise, I didn’t find it that hard to follow.
The John Wick movies have never been known to have Oscar-winning caliber scripts and they always rely on Keanu and the action to keep audiences coming back. However, the script for Chapter 4 is actually fairly solid. It’s got lots of emotion and some great character work, specifically for the characters of John Wick and Caine. While we’re on the topic of Caine, Donnie Yen is the standout in this film alongside Reeves and his character is a VERY welcome addition to the John Wick franchise. I hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him because I thoroughly enjoyed his character.
The movie’s runtime, while long, is necessary to help with all of the major action sequences and although I found myself checking my watch near the end and hoping that it could’ve taken 20 minutes off, it’s not a major issue because the action kicks in at the right times to keep you engaged for even longer.
Overall, John Wick: Chapter 4 is far and away the best film in the franchise and one of the greatest action films of all time, period. Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have created an action film for the ages and if the Oscars gave the stunt teams any appreciation, which they should, then this movie would be cleaning up at the award shows.
