Disney+ is headed back to the Kinneyverse.

OTN can confirm that Disney+ is actively developing two new Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated films for the streaming platform. The Getaway, the twelfth book in the series, is one of them. The book follows the Heffley family going to a tropical resort during the holidays. In true Wimpy Kid fashion, hijinks and chaos ensues on the trip.

Matt Danner (Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again), who will be directing The Getaway, took to social media to confirm the news of the film, while adding the context about a fourth Wimpy Kid film coming out this Christmas. It’s still unknown which book will be adapted for this year’s film. The DisInsider was first to report on news of The Getaway.

Back in 2022, OTN spoke to Jeff Kinney for the Rodrick Rules press junket and he confirmed an animated adaptation of The Last Straw is in development, but no updates on the film have come since then. A third film however, based on fan-favourite installment Cabin Fever, came out in 2023.

A new actor will voice Greg Heffley in The Getaway, with a casting search currently underway. Recording will begin by the end of August. Due to the holiday setting of The Getaway, it’s safe to assume this will be a Christmas 2026 release on Disney+. Read the synopsis for The Getaway:

Greg Heffley and his family are getting out of town. With the cold weather setting in and the stress of the Christmas holiday approaching, the Heffley family decides to escape to a tropical island resort for some much-needed rest and relaxation. A few days in paradise should do wonders for Greg and his frazzled family. But the Heffleys soon discover that paradise isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be. Sun-poisoning, stomach troubles and venomous creatures all threaten to ruin the family’s vacation. Can their trip be saved, or will this island getaway end in disaster?
