The Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise is one that’s near and dear to my heart. I’ve been reading the books since they debuted in 2007 and I still buy them yearly. I loved the first trilogy and really enjoyed 2021’s animated version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Recently, I was given the opportunity to speak with Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney during the press junket for the upcoming animated film, Rodrick Rules, and when I asked him about the future of the franchise and adapting the next book in the franchise, The Last Straw, here’s what he had to say:

Yeah, I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say but I will say that yes, The Last Straw is in the works and I’m hoping to do lots and lots of [animated Wimpy Kid films] over time.

Jeff Kinney

When the Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated movie was announced in 2020, Kinney said that the plan was to release a new Wimpy Kid film every year but we’ve never gotten any official confirmation since then for anything beyond Rodrick Rules. Regarding Kinney’s involvement in the project, it’s a safe bet to assume he will write the script for this one as he has written the scripts for all six of the Wimpy Kid films. However, Kinney did not confirm that to me.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw is currently in the works for Disney+ and has no release date. Are you excited to see more Wimpy Kid films? Let us know and stay tuned for more from our conversation with Jeff Kinney!
