It’s that time of the year when Halloween specials are being released and Disney has a special treat for Muppet fans. The Muppets are some of the most iconic figures in pop culture. Nearly everyone knows Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the rest of the gang.  Sadly, in recent years, Disney hasn’t made much use of them in their programming. Before last year’s release of Muppets Now, their use was regulated to a Muppet Babies reboot that didn’t do very well. Well, Disney is releasing Muppets Haunted Mansion in time for Halloween and it is a truly special Halloween show that is sure to please old fans and create new fans along the way. Let’s get into it!

In this story, Gonzo the Great and Pepé the King Prawn go to a haunted mansion in search of the great magician MacGuffin. In film, a MacGuffin is a plot device that serves to move the story forward, so giving this name to the magician is a great little pun.  The chemistry between Gonzo and Pepe is undeniable.  This duo is responsible for delivering most of the laughs and just about every joke and gag lands successfully.  Along with a great script, there are also three great musical numbers that are sure to please, especially for younger fans.

As always, The Muppets are known for their celebrity cameos and this special is no exception.  Without giving too much away, there are appearances by Darren Everett Criss, Will Arnett, Yvette Nicole Brown, John Stamos, the late Ed Asner, and more.  The biggest highlight for me was the outstanding performance of Taraji P. Henson. She really committed to this role and her performance is killer!!

Overall, The Muppets have never failed to get a laugh out of me and this special was no exception.  I thoroughly enjoyed Muppets Haunted Mansion and it reminded me of why I loved the Muppets in the first place.  I had a smile on my face all the way through and I definitely recommend checking it out. I’m giving it a 9/10.
