Folks, the time is finally here. Nearly three months after shocking the comic-book world, James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally revealed the first chapter in their DCU. Subtitled Gods and Monsters, the Dynamic Duo revealed ten new projects, all of which are slated to come out sometime in the next 2-3 years. The projects that Gunn and Safran announced were:
Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, Creature Commandos, Amanda Waller, and Green Lantern Corps.
On top of announcing all these new projects, Gunn and Safran dated Superman: Legacy and The Batman: Part II for July 11, 2025 and October 3, 2025 releases, respectively.
Superman: Legacy
This project shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. In December 2022, Gunn shocked the fandom by announcing Henry Cavill, who made his long awaited return as the Man of Steel in Black Adam, would no longer be Superman and that he was writing a script that will follow a younger Superman. While not confirmed, Gunn also implied he would be directing the project as well. No details other than that were revealed. Superman: Legacy will release on July 11, 2025.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
In August 2022, following the shocking cancellation of Batgirl, it was reported that the Supergirl film was in jeopardy. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated to be one of the films in the upcoming DCU slate. No cast and crew have been announced yet and it’s still unknown if Sasha Calle will return. The film has no release date.
The Brave and the Bold
Despite the title, this is NOT an adaptation of the comic-book series or the cartoon show but rather a story focusing on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian Wayne. Gunn and Safran confirmed that Robert Pattinson will NOT be portraying Batman in this film and will remain in Elseworlds. No casting for Damian Wayne has been announced along with no crew. The film has no release date.
Swamp Thing
After being unceremoniously cancelled by DC Universe, Swamp Thing is finally getting another chance. A Swamp Thing film was announced by Gunn and Safran and just like the rest of these projects, no cast or crew have been announced. However, OTN has heard from sources they might have already a director for the project but we couldn’t confirm it. Swamp Thing has no release date.
The Authority
In true James Gunn fashion, there’s always going to be some obscure characters in the mix. The Authority is a team of superheroes that will get the job done, no matter what they have to do. While not confirmed, they’re expected to have some sort of connection to Superman in the DCU. No cast and crew have been revealed and the film has no release date.
Now that we’ve gotten all the movies announced out of the way, let’s go on to the shows, which are expected to release on HBO Max.
Paradise Lost
The first show revealed was a Wonder Woman prequel called Paradise Lost. It will focus on Themyscira prior to the birth of Diana. No cast members from the Wonder Woman films, such as Connie Neilsen, have been announced to return yet and no crew either. Paradise Lost has no release date.
Booster Gold
Finally, Booster Gold will make his live action debut! This doesn’t seem to be connected to Greg Berlanti’s Booster Gold film, which was in development hell. While not confirmed, the iteration of the character is expected to be Michael Jon Carter. Gunn revealed an actor has been approached for the role but nobody has officially signed on just yet. No cast and crew have been revealed and the show has no release date.
Creature Commandos
Creature Commandos will be a seven episode animated series written by James Gunn. The series is already in production but no voice actors have been cast yet. The series is set to follow the obscure group of characters in the DC Comics. The series has no release date.
Waller
The first project that will release from this slate, Waller is James Gunn’s secret show that he’s been working on from as far back as January 2022. Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller and the series will take place between Peacemaker Seasons 1 and 2. The show is expected to go into production soon.
Lanterns
Finally, Green Lantern has hope for redemption! After Greg Berlanti’s Green Lantern Corps. series was revealed to be getting reworked back in October 2022, Gunn and Safran have announced Lanterns, a True Detective-esque show following Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Gunn has already been speaking to actors for the project but nobody has officially been confirmed. Lanterns has no release date.
Now that’ we’ve gone through all the newly announced projects, let’s get into Elseworlds and the three projects in that universe.
Joker: Folie à Deux
Todd Philip’s sequel to the Oscar-winning Joker has been filming for a few months now and has an all-star cast to back it up. Joaquin Phoenix and Zazie Beetz return from the first film. Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey join them as newcomers to the DC Universe. The film is slated to release on the fifth anniversary of the first film, October 4, 2024.
The Batman Part II
After The Batman was a critical and financial success for Warner Bros, a sequel was a no brainer. The sequel was announced at CinemaCon2022 and now we have a release date of October 3, 2025
