The premise for today’s What If…? episode was “What if there was a zombie apocalypse?” and it was the simplest plot of the episodes we have seen so far in this series. Zombies have become very commonplace in film and television over the years and as a result, I believe they have become less interesting. Luckily, today’s episode is the exception to that rule. Full of action, gore, heart and thrills, this week’s episode delivers in a lot of areas and is sure to satisfy fans. Let’s dive into it.
In short, the episode takes place around Infinity War when Hulk is sent back to Earth to warn the others that Thanos is coming to attack. Instead, he finds that all the Avengers are zombies. We follow the team of Spider-Man, Wasp, Sharon Carter, Okoye, Happy Hogan and Kurt, all voiced by their original actors, except for Spider-Man, likely due to legal issues with Sony. The ensemble cast of this episode is easily the most star-studded cast to date in the What If…? franchise and will be a real delight for fans.
All the characters in this episode have a good story arc including some of the surprise characters. The storyline is very good, but I think the pacing could have been improved. In my opinion, making this a 60-minute episode or even a 2-part episode would have allowed for more plot and character development. There is more to be explored with this concept and the ending is already set up for a second part…maybe next season.
In terms of the visuals, the art style curated for this episode was incredible. The zombies were very creepy and there was enough gore to please horror fans, like me. The animation was creative, innovative, and fluid and fit really well with the undead theme.
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode and am hoping for a part 2. I’m giving this episode a solid 8.5/10.
