D23 Expo is fast approaching and being the first Expo since the pandemic, you know that the House of Mouse is going to come out swinging. With so many big projects coming out soon, It’s safe to assume we’re gonna be learning about a lot soon. In this article, I’m going to go over the 5 big things I want to see at this year’s D23 Expo. Just remember that these are all my personal opinions and your list may differ from mine, especially with my top choice. So, without further ado, here’s the 5 things I want to see at the D23 Expo.
5. Phase 6 projects and release dates
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is never lacking in content and never lacking in plans. While Kevin Feige somehow surpassed the already enormous hype for Marvel Studios’ first panel at SDCC since 2019, there was still many unanswered questions, the main one being “What’s releasing in Phase 6?”. While we know that it’ll start with Fantastic Four and end with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, there’s still 8 empty release dates for unannounced projects. While unconfirmed, it’s likely that we’ll see Wonder Man and Nova, two projects that have been in development for quite some time now, take up two of those spots. Armor Wars, the Wakanda show, Deadpool 3 and maybe even The Mutants could take up these spots. However, only time will tell as to what these projects could be.

4. Updates for Disney and Pixar content
Going into this year’s Expo, this might be the big thing that Disney needs to focus on. They already have laid out their plans for the MCU and Star Wars universe for the next few years and there’s already enormous amounts of anticipation for both franchises. However, Disney’s in-house IPs might need some more love at the Expo this year. Pixar’s going to need to give us some updates on their upcoming films such as Elemental and maybe on some of their Disney+ shows like Zootpia+ or films like Strange World. Disney is also expected to shed some light on upcoming films such as their live-action Lilo and Stitch film, directed by Marcel the Shell director Dean Fleischer-Camp (we chatted with him and OTN got the first confirmation from Fleischer-Camp himself about the project!). Overall, Disney’s going to need to push a lot of their in-house IPs and make a big splash at the Expo.

3. Indiana Jones 5 footage
This one has to happen and if it doesn’t, I’ll be shocked. Indiana Jones 5 has been a long time coming and after years in development hell that led to franchise director and film legend Steven Spielberg leaving the project, Logan director James Mangold stepped in and the project got off the ground. Finally, the first image from the film was revealed at Star Wars Celebration and Boyd Hollbrook revealed in an interview with The Movie Podcast that he’s even seen 30 minutes of the film. Pair this and the big platform D23 has, it makes total sense for the first public footage to debut at D23.

2. A new Star Wars show/updates on already announced shows
This one is a pipe dream but I can dream, can’t I? It’s no secret Lucasfilm has a habit of announcing things too early and then hearing nothing about them for years. In 2020, a plethora of shows were announced and since then, only Andor, Ahsoka, The Bad Batch and Star Wars: Visions have gotten released or headed into production. I think it would be great to hear updates on Lando, A Droid Story, The Acolyte, and Rogue Squadron. Or, better yet, announce something new. OTN has heard rumblings of an unannounced Star Wars show that is currently in pre-production. If what we’ve heard is true, then D23 is the best place to reveal it. But, even if we hear nothing, some new castings for the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew would also be nice (we’ve also heard some names for that as well) since the project is currently filming and expected to release next year. In short, Lucasfilm has to bring out the big guns and shower us with updates on long-awaited shows.

Now, some of you may be surprised to see this at #1 for me but the thing I want to see get revealed at the D23 Expo the most is…
1. Ms. Marvel Season 2
Never have I wanted a project to get a second season more than Ms. Marvel. It is by far my favourite MCU show (I’ve seen every episode well over 5 times now) and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan is one of my top 3 MCU characters. I feel like there’s so much storytelling left and I’d love to see some of the more popular Ms. Marvel storylines, such as her first adventures with Lockjaw, be adapted for the show. Of course, you can’t forget that Kamala Khan is now a mutant in the MCU so that opens lots of doors for her future and the future of mutants in general. If they were to renew the show for a second season, I’d also love to see Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah back as producers and directors. I personally think that it would be a mistake if this show wouldn’t get a second season renewal and I hope that they reveal it at D23.

While there’s many other things I’d like to see revealed at D23, these are without question the top 5 things for me. What are you hoping to see at D23 this year? Let me know!
