Melissa Barrera was quietly let go from Scream VII, multiple sources confirmed to One Take News. Her exit comes following controversial statements amid the Israel-Hamas crisis, with one source describing her comments as Anti-Semitic.

Barrera was the star of the last two films, playing protagonist Sam Carpenter, the illegitimate child of Billy Loomis who’s a frequent target for Ghostface. She co-starred alongside her on-screen sister, Jenna Ortega and was set to once again lead the seventh instalment of the beloved slasher franchise.

Melissa Barrera (“Sam Carpenter”) stars in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group’s “Scream VI.”

Scream VII has been in development for quite some time, with Christopher Landon taking over from directing team Radio Silence. The team, consisting of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin,Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villeva, wished to focus on their upcoming Universal Monster film Dracula’s Daughter, also starring Barrera. However, the team remains on board as producers. We are told the script is going under a massive overhaul, possibly a complete re-write, but it is unknown if Sam Carpenter will be recast or written out at this time.

News of Barrera’s firing was first reported in today’s print issue of Variety.
