El Muerto has hit yet another road bump as multiple sources tell One Take News Bad Bunny will no longer be starring in the project. Sources say that despite the musician’s exit, there are no plans to scrap the film yet and the role is currently being recast, although the writer’s strike may change those plans. It is also unknown if Bad Bunny will remain on board as an executive producer or not.

Sony Pictures had no comment.

Sources tell us that this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Bad Bunny is the world’s largest musician and combined with him touring as well as his commitments to the WWE, his schedule is extremely packed and is not made to accommodate a filming schedule for a major blockbuster pic. The writer’s strike also delayed the filming date. Pair that with rumblings that the star ruffled some feathers with Sony and it’s no surprise he’s not involved anymore.

For those not in the know, Bad Bunny is the entire reason El Muerto was developed in the first place. Sony execs were impressed by Bad Bunny’s performance in Bullet Train and wanted to create another project around him ASAP. After searching and searching, they settled upon the obscure character from the Spider-Man universe.

In Marvel comics, El Muerto is as obscure as it gets. The character has only appeared in two Spider-Man issues and nowhere else. The current identity of El Muerto is Juan-Carlos Sánchez, but the name has been taken up by many masked wrestlers who wear the mystical wrestling mask for power.

El Muerto will be directed by Jonás Cuarón and written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer. It’s currently off the release schedule. Are you looking forward to El Muerto? Let us know!
